Kevin Kelly is the co-founder of Wired magazine and has published over ten books on varied topics like technology, photography, hand drawn poetry, and the economy. His podcast interviews are always a good listen, and I find him to be an all around interesting guy.

During one such podcast interview last year he was talking about his new book Excellent Advice of Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier, and I went that day to the library to pick it up. I’m a sucker for hearing advice from older, successful people (Kevin Kelly is in his 70's).

It’s a very quick read full of tweet-length aphorisms. If you flip through it at the bookstore, you might think, “this is it?” Even so, I’m glad I read it. Many of the passages can be described as decent, mostly common sense wisdom distilled down to a pithy sentence or two. Within these are some bits of advice that I did find to be truly excellent, and I still think about some of them all the time.

Here are my very favorite passages:

  1. You can be whatever you want to be, so be the person who ends meetings early.
  2. To have a great trip, head toward an interest rather than to a place. Travel to passions
